China's CATL unveils battery planned to power planes
China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) has unveiled a new battery that is planned to power planes. The battery is designed to be used in regional aircraft and could potentially reduce carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
The battery, called the "Fengli" battery, has a capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and weighs around 1,000 kilograms. It is made up of lithium iron phosphate cells and has a lifespan of around 10,000 cycles.
CATL has said that the battery is currently undergoing certification tests and is expected to be ready for commercial use in 2022. The company has also said that it is working on developing batteries for larger aircraft.
The aviation industry is one of the largest contributors to global carbon emissions, and there has been increasing pressure to find ways to reduce these emissions. The use of electric planes powered by batteries could be one solution to this problem.
CATL is one of the world's largest battery manufacturers and has been expanding its operations in recent years. The company has partnerships with several major automakers, including BMW and Volkswagen, and is also working on developing batteries for other applications, such as energy storage systems.
The development of the Fengli battery is a significant step forward in the use of electric planes and could have a major impact on the aviation industry. It remains to be seen how quickly the technology will be adopted and how effective it will be in reducing carbon emissions, but it is clear that CATL is at the forefront of this important development.
