Apple to Manufacture iPhones at New Plant in India
Apple Inc. will manufacture iPhones at a new plant in India, officials said Friday, as the US tech giant seeks to ramp up its India production and diversify away from Chinese production.
Apple executives have reportedly been in talks with the Indian government for months to locate a new site for the plant, as well as to secure government subsidies. The plant will be located in an industrial park near New Delhi.
The announcement comes as Apple is facing increasing scrutiny from the US government over its reliance on manufacturing in China. The company has previously said it is looking to reduce its reliance on Chinese production, and India is seen as a potential alternative.
It is unclear when the plant will open, however it is expected to create thousands of new jobs in India. Apple already manufactures some of its products in India, and the new plant is seen as a way to further solidify its presence in the country.
